SUMMIT SERIES 1972

1972 Summit Series. Strat Cards created by Rob Gallamore. Canada vs. Russia.

I created some Strat hockey cards for the classic 1972 Summit Series. The first meeting between the NHL stars and the Russian National team. All scouting reports back to the Canadians were that it would be an easy series. Paul Henderson turned to his linemates in the first period and said, “This is going to be a long series.” How correct he was.

Some replay hints :

  • each team only dressed 17 skaters and 2 goalies
  • the Russians rarely played their extra skaters
  • the Russians played their lines in sets of 3. So the same defensemen played with the same forwards
  • Canada used their extra forwards, usually a 4th line, much more than the Russians
  • recommendation: play 3 lines, 2-2 offense . Sub in the Canada forwards playing half of a shift in the first two periods. Avoid using Russian extras until the third period. Some good players were not played very much by the Russians, almost as if they were resting players.
  • Each team scored 32 goals in the eight game series. Russia scored 9 of their goals on the powerplay. Canada scored 2. Canada outplayed Russia when even strength. Russia’s powerplay was a big factor in the series.
  • If you are interested in the cards I created please send me an email.
The cards are in Microsoft Word format. Contact me via email at gitch16@shaw.ca Rob Gallamore
