2014- GIANTS BEAT THE ROYALS IN 7
It took 7 games, but the wild card San FRancisco Giants defeat the KC Royals in game seven to win the 2014 MLB World Series . The Giants had to beat the Pirates in the wild card game , then they beat the Washington Nationals 3-1, the St.Louis Cardinals 4 games to 1 and finally the Royals. Kansas City won their wild card game over Oakland, and then proceeded to defeat the LA Angels in three straight games, and beat the Baltimore Orioles in four straight games. They go to the World Series undefeated in playoff baseball, but run into a buzzsaw in the Giants.
NY Mets 1 at Chicago 9 Welington Castillo blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Jake Arrieta struck out 12 batters as the Chicago (NL) Cubs outscored the New York (NL) Mets 9 to 1. The Chicago (NL) fans enjoyed the offense provided by Castillo. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning, delivered a single in the 2nd inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 4th inning. Chicago (NL) had a total of 16 hits for the game. The winning pitcher was Arrieta(2-0) who allowed 1 run for the game. The losing pitcher was Jon Niese(0-3). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Terry Collins was upset after the game. ‘I don’t like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?’, he said. ‘Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it’s printed in the rule book.’
#2 NY Mets 7 at Chicago 6 (14 innings) ** Right fielder Curtis Granderson left the yard and had 3 RBI at Wrigley Field where the New York (NL) Mets beat the Chicago (NL) Cubs in 14 innings by the score of 7 to 6. Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, New York (NL) prevailed in the 14th inning. Juan Lagares ripped a base-knock. Lucas Duda struck out, unable to help the rally. David Wright then slapped a one-base hit. Daniel Murphy came up and he reached on an error. Travis D’Arnaud came up to bat and was walked intentionally. Granderson was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Chicago (NL) was out-hit by New York (NL), 15 hits to 10. The win was credited to Jenrry Mejia(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Wesley Wright(0-2) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.
#3.Chicago Cubs 1 at New York Mets 2. Jacob Degrom went 8 solid innings and catcher Travis D’Arnaud hit 2 doubles as the New York (NL) Mets outscored the Chicago (NL) Cubs 2 to 1. Degrom(4-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He surrendered only 4 hits and no walks in 8 innings. Degrom chalked up 9 strikeouts reducing his ERA from 2.22 to 1.98. Degrom got help from Jeurys Familia who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save. Tsuyoshi Wada(1-1) ended up with the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.
#4. Chicago Cubs 3 at New York Mets 4. 40,459 fans were treated to a fine game at Citi Field as only one run separated the combatants at game’s end. The New York (NL) Mets won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. Josh Edgin(2-1) pitched well in relief and was credited with the victory. He surrendered only 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning lowering his ERA to 2.25. New York (NL) finished with 7 hits in the victory. Edgin got relief help from Jeurys Familia who gained credit for his 3rd save. Hector Rondon(0-1) took the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.
#6 NY Mets 3 at Chicago Cubs 8. Welington Castillo had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Kyle Hendricks went 8 and one third strong innings at Wrigley Field as the Chicago (NL) Cubs beat the New York (NL) Mets by the count of 8 to 3. Castillo enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He stroked a base-hit resulting in a run in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 4th inning, doubled which was good for two runs in the 5th inning and doubled bringing in a run in the 7th inning. Overall Chicago (NL) out-hit New York (NL) 11 to 5. Hendricks(2-0) allowed 2 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. The losing pitcher was Dillon Gee(1-1). He gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and saw his ERA jump from 1.88 to 3.72.
#7. NY Mets at Chicago Cubs Jacob Degrom mowed down 12 Chicago (NL) batters as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the Chicago (NL) Cubs 6 to 2 at Wrigley Field. Degrom(5-0) was solid in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Chicago (NL) was out-hit by New York (NL), 10 hits to 4. The losing pitcher was Neil Ramirez(2-1) in relief. He saw his ERA jump from 2.45 to 4.09 as gave up 2 runs without retiring a batter. Degrom was humble when questioned about his performance, ‘Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches this afternoon. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!’
NY Mets win best of 7 NLCS 4-3
#1. Kansas City 2 at Chicago 5 Jose Quintana was marvelous and the White Sox jumped on Shields for 5 runs in the first inning to win this one easily.
#2. Kansas City 8 at Chicago 0. Royals come back hard hitting Danks for a ton of runs and Ventura was really solid pitching a shutout in the victory
#3. Chicago 0 at Kansas City 2. Great pitching duel between Duffy and Chris Sale. Duffy eventually won out as the Royals win a pitcher duel.
#4. Chicago 4 at KC 3 . Quintana and Shields again matched up. Like game one, the White Sox jump on Shields early for four runs and then hang on as the Royals mount a spirited comeback. Series now tied at 2-2.
#5. Chicago 3 at Kansas City 7.The Kansas City Royals bested the Chicago (AL) White Sox by a 7 to 3 score at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. Lorenzo Cain opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Nori Aoki came next and he slapped a single. Alex Gordon then lashed a single. Two outs later Josh Willingham came to bat and delivered a one-base hit. Both teams totaled 12 hits on the night. Jason Vargas(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. John Danks(0-2) was given the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
#6. Kansas City 1 at Chicago 2. Scott Carroll had a strong outing as the Chicago (AL) White Sox topped the Kansas City Royals by a score of 2 to 1 at US Cellular Field. Chicago (AL) took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 3rd inning plating one baserunner utilizing 2 base hits. Tyler Flowers lashed a single. Carlos Sanchez next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Adam Eaton then doubled. Kansas City threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Carroll(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Jake Petricka recorded his 7th save. Yordano Ventura(1-1) was tagged with the loss.
#7. Kansas City 3 at Chicago 2. UNBELIEVEABLE RALLY!!! TOP OF NINTH ROYALS DOWN 2-0, PULL OFF 3-2 WIN!!!!
In a great finish the Kansas City Royals came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Chicago (AL) White Sox by a score of 3 to 2 at US Cellular Field.
Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Billy Butler led off the inning for Kansas City when he drew a walk. Jake Petricka then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch. Salvador Perez then laced a single. Eric Hosmer followed and he doubled. Alcides Escobar stepped into the box and lined a one-base hit, and an error was also committed. One out later, Nori Aoki followed, but he was set down on strikes. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
Wade Davis(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and allowing no runs. Davis was helped out by Greg Holland who recorded his 4th save. Petricka(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.
Ned Yost was all smiles after the game, ‘To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling – and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that’s what makes baseball so great – as the great sage Yogi Berra says, ‘it’s not over ’til its over.’

#2. New York Mets 5 at Kansas City Royals 4.Kirk Nieuwenhuis had 2 base hits at Kauffman Stadium where the New York (NL) Mets beat the Kansas City Royals 5 to 4. The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Curtis Granderson blasted a solo shot. Ruben Tejada stepped into the batter’s box and he doubled. Both teams ended up with 10 hits on the night. Josh Edgin(3-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Edgin got help from Jeurys Familia who earned his 4th save. Jason Frasor(0-1) was the loser in relief.
#3. Kansas City 1 at New York 6. Ruben Tejada had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Citi Field where the New York (NL) Mets beat the Kansas City Royals by the score of 6 to 1. New York (NL) took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner utilizing 3 base hits. New York (NL) had 11 hits for the game and Kansas City had 4. Zack Wheeler(2-1) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Danny Duffy(2-2) was the loser. He pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks.

(10 innings) Dillon Gee went 7 strong innings and Travis D’Arnaud hit 2 doubles at Citi Field as the New York (NL) Mets beat the Kansas City Royals in 10 innings 3 to 2.
