The 2008 champion Philadelphia Phillies met up with the long standing World Series champion the New York Yankees for the World Series. The Yankees prevailed winning the World Series in six games. Hideki Matsui was the hero, earning the World Series MVP award.

The New York (AL) Yankees registered 4 runs in the 7th inning and defeated the Minnesota Twins by a score of 6 to 3 at Yankee Stadium.

New York (AL) had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Jorge Posada who made the crowd happy when he cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun. Although they lost, Minnesota did out-hit New York (AL) 9 to 4.

Phil Hughes(2-1) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Mariano Rivera earned his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Scott Baker(2-2). He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk.

At Yankee Stadium the Minnesota Twins outscored the New York (AL) Yankees 5 to 2.New York (AL) never recovered after Minnesota took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning plating an isolated run on 3 hits. Minnesota ended up with 12 hits for the game while New York (AL) had 5.

The victory was credited to Nick Blackburn(2-0) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. A.J. Burnett(2-2) took the loss. He was knocked around by Minnesota, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Game 3. NY Yankees 6 at Minnesota 0

Andy Pettitte(1-1), with relief help from Brian Bruney, mystified Minnesota while the New York (AL) Yankees scored 6 runs in a day game at Metrodome.

New York (AL) took the lead for good in the 4th inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. New York (AL) had 10 hits overall, while Minnesota had 7.

Elijah Dukes connected with a ‘big fly’ and had 2 RBI and J.D. Martin had a strong outing as the Washington Nationals outscored the Houston Astros 5 to 2.

Washington scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning when they had 4 base hits. Josh Willingham led off and started the attack as he laced a one-base hit. Dukes stepped into the batter’s box and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run. Wil Nieves then lined a single. After an out was recorded, Martin stepped up to the plate and he doubled. The St. Louis Cardinals nipped the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 4 to 3 at Dodger Stadium in a hard fought contest.
St. Louis did all of it’s offensive work in the 1st inning scoring 4 runners on 3 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Los Angeles(NL) had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Orlando Hudson slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI at Busch Stadium as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers, running on all cylinders, ripped the St. Louis Cardinals by a large 18 to 6 margin. Hudson was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team’s expense. He smacked a three-run homer in the 3rd inning, smacked a single bringing in a run in the 3rd inning and banged out a one-base hit in the 9th inning. Los Angeles(NL) kept the scorekeepers busy in the 3rd inning when they had 14 runs on 12 hits. Randy Wolf(3-2) and Roy Oswalt(3-2) locked horns in a pitcher’s duel with Wolf and the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers coming out on top of the Houston Astros 2 to 1.
Los Angeles(NL) scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning. That early scoring was all that Wolf needed. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.

#4. Houston 5 at LA Dodgers 4 (Series tied 2-2).

Jose Valverde closed the door on Los Angeles(NL) and Geoff Blum had 3 base hits as the Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 5 to 4 at Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles(NL) surrendered all of the runs Houston needed in the 3rd inning scoring 5 runners on 6 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Hunter Pence who quieted the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Los Angeles(NL) was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.
Latroy Hawkins(1-0) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Hawkins got help from Valverde who was credited with his 10th save. Chad Billingsley(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 5 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched 9 strong innings and third baseman Ronnie Belliard hit one over the fence as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers outscored the Houston Astros 4 to 1.
Los Angeles(NL) jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring one runner. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.
The winning pitcher was Kuroda(3-2) who allowed 1 run for the game. Wandy Rodriguez(3-4) was tagged with the loss. ‘All of my pitches were working tonight,’ Kuroda said. ‘I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.’

#6. LA Dodgers 4 at Houston 6. (Series tied 3-3)

Hunter Pence had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Houston Astros won a dandy at Minute Maid Park over the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers, 6 to 4.
Houston had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Miguel Tejada led off and he lined a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Pence stepped up to the plate and he bombed a two-run dinger resulting in an exciting win for Houston and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Houston had 11 hits overall, while Los Angeles(NL) had 6.
Jose Valverde(1-0) allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning, and picked up the victory. Jonathan Broxton(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits and no walks.

#7. LA Dodgers 2 at Houston 4.

In a close game it was the Houston Astros 4, the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 2 at Minute Maid Park.
Houston came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Hunter Pence opened up the inning nicely when he delivered a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Lance Berkman stepped up to the plate and he doubled. Humberto Quintero then drew a walk. After another out, Edwin Maysonet stepped in and he doubled. George Sherrill then threw one that got by the catcher for a passed ball. Michael Bourn got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Both teams ended up with 7 hits on the night.
The victory was credited to Latroy Hawkins(2-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. Jose Valverde was credited with his 11th save. Ronald Belisario(1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Los Angeles(AL) ended up winning it in the 10th inning. Torii Hunter cracked a solo homerun making Los Angeles(AL) the winners and sending the 29,517 fans home happy. Los Angeles(AL) had a total of 10 hits for the game.

threatened in the 9th but New York (AL) was able to put down the rally.
 
Burnett got help from Mariano Rivera who was credited with his 9th save. Mike
Hampton(1-1) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3
innings.  
 
Joe Girardi was asked about the performance of Burnett, 'He had his good stuff
out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start
