He went 7 and 2/3 innings surrendering 6 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 1.80 to 1.59. Brad Lidge was great in relief and recorded his 5th save. Jeremy Accardo(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Mets 0 at Houston 3 Morgan Ensberg touched them all and had 2 RBI and Roger Clemens allowed 1 hit while blanking New York (NL) at Minute Maid Field as the Houston Astros beat the New York (NL) Mets by the count of 3 to 0. Clemens(4-0) dominated New York (NL) hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. Clemens mowed down 11 New York (NL) batters. New York (NL) was retired without difficulty in the 9th. Pedro Martinez(3-2) was hit with the loss. Clemens was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, ‘It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I’ll sure take 11 strikeouts anytime!’

#2. New York Mets 8 at HOuston Astros 2 Third baseman David Wright smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Tom Glavine took a no-hitter into the 9th inning at Minute Maid Field where the New York (NL) Mets beat the Houston Astros by the score of 8 to 2. Wright provided much of the offense. He clubbed a three-run home run in the 6th inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 3rd of the season) in the 9th inning. Houston was out-hit by New York (NL), 11 hits to 4. The winning pitcher was Glavine(2-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. The left-handed Glavine had his no-hit bid broken up by Brad Ausmus who singled with one out in the 9th inning. Roy Oswalt(2-2) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3 innings.

#3 Houston 8 at NY Mets 2 The Houston Astros had an easy time of it at Shea Stadium defeating the New York (NL) Mets by a score of 8 to 2. Andy Pettitte(2-0) had a solid outing for Houston. He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks improving his ERA from 2.75 to 2.39. New York (NL) was out-hit by Houston, 15 hits to 9. Kris Benson(1-2) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 10 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.

#4 Houston 3 at NY Mets 6 The New York Mets used the long ball early and often to defeat the Houston Astros. Mike Cameron, Cliff Floyd and David Wright all homered for the Mets. Aaron Heilman was solid for the Mets allowing only three hits after 6 innings. Brandon Backe picked up the loss for Houston

#5 Houston 2 at NY Mets 1 Roger Clemens(5-0) and Pedro Martinez(3-3) treated the New York (NL) fans to a fine pitching duel at Shea Stadium. The Houston Astros eventually emerged as victors over the New York (NL) Mets by the score of 2 to 1. In the 7th inning Houston scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Jason Lane who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he laced a base-knock plating two runs. New York (NL) had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Brad Lidge earned the save, his 6th.

#6 NY Mets 1 at Houston 2 Willy Taveras had 3 base hits as the Houston Astros defeated the New York (NL) Mets 2 to 1 at Minute Maid Field. Roy Oswalt(3-2) pitched well for Houston in their victory. He was reached for 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.21 to 2.57. Brad Lidge relieved and was untouched by New York (NL) as he recorded the save, his 7th. Tom Glavine(2-2) ended up with the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

 
#1. Detroit 11 at Minnesota 12 In a thriller the Minnesota Twins staged a dramatic comeback over the Detroit Tigers winning by a score of 12 to 11 at Metrodome. Minnesota erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Jacque Jones led off and he slapped a single. After an out was recorded, Glenn Williams came up and he doubled. Mike Ryan then smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Minnesota and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Although they lost, Detroit did out-hit Minnesota 19 to 16. The winning pitcher was Juan Rincon(1-1) who allowed 1 run in 1 inning. Troy Percival(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Rincon and Jones were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Ron Gardenhire noted, ‘A win like this one can do wonders for a team’s attitude.’ Everyone shares in the joy – the fans, the players – even you guys – it’s better than winning by a dozen runs!’

#2 Detroit 10 at Minnesota 9 W Johnson 1-2 L- Radke 1-3

#3 Minnesota 0 at Detroit 2 Jeremy Bonderman took a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Comerica Park where the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 2 to 0. Bonderman(3-2) simply dominated Minnesota. He surrendered only 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings improving his ERA from 5.33 to 3.93. The right-handed Bonderman lost his chance for a no-hitter when Glenn Williams singled with two outs in the 8th inning. Detroit managed only 5 on the afternoon. Carlos Silva(2-1) was the loser. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits and no walks.

#4. Minnesota 10 at Detroit 2 Luis Rodriguez had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Johan Santana dominated striking out 10 Detroit batters at Comerica Park where the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 10 to 2. Santana(5-0) was very good in the win. He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Minnesota had 19 hits for the night. Nate Robertson(1-1) was charged with the loss. Minnesota scored big getting 5 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings. Santana, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, ‘The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!’

#5 Minnesota 4 at Detroit 3 (13 innings) Mike Cuddyer had 2 base hits at Comerica Park as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers in 13 innings by the count of 4 to 3. The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Minnesota was victorious in the 13th inning. Joe Mauer laced a base-hit. Franklyn German then had one get away for a wild pitch. After an out was recorded, Cuddyer stepped up to the plate and he delivered a single scoring the run. Although they lost, Detroit did out-hit Minnesota 14 to 10. Jesse Crain(1-2) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The loss was charged to Chris Spurling(2-1) in relief. He pitched 2 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.

#6 Detroit 2 at Minnesota 5 Jacque Jones homered and had 3 RBI as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 2. Scott Baker(3-0) gave Minnesota a solid outing. He surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 6 and 1/3 innings improving his ERA from 3.00 to 2.53. Minnesota managed 8 in their victory. Joe Nathan recorded his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Jason Johnson(1-3). He was hit hard and gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

#1 Minnesota 0 at Houston 1 The game was decided in the bottom of the 8th inning. Jeff Bagwell blasted a solo shot (his 1st of the season). Minnesota had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Lidge earned the save, his 8th. J.C. Romero(0-1) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1 inning.

#2. Minnesota 0 at Houston 5 Roy Oswalt tossed a complete game shutout as the Houston Astros defeated the Minnesota Twins 5 to 0 at Minute Maid Field. Oswalt(4-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Minnesota batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.57 to 2.05. Houston totaled 10 on the night. Carlos Silva(2-2) was the loser. He gave up 2 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.

#3 Houston 2 at Minnesota 3Jason Bartlett had 2 base hits at Metrodome as the Minnesota Twins beat the Houston Astros by the count of 3 to 2. Brad Radke(2-3) earned his pay with a solid performance for Minnesota. He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 ‘long-bombs’ seeing his ERA drop from 5.17 to 4.80. Houston made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Joe Nathan gained credit for his 4th save. Andy Pettitte(2-1) was the loser. He was knocked around by Minnesota, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

#4 Houston 0 at Minnesota 4 Catcher Joe Mauer had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Johan Santana threw a complete game shutout as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 4 to 0 at Metrodome.
