Negro leagues. Hilldale at KC Monarchs . Hilldale explodes for six runs in the eighth inning to blow this one open. They had a 3-2 lead going into the inning. The key hit was a two run double by Bill Mackey. Tank Carr, Bernardo Baro, Alejandro Oms, Red Parnell, Judy Johnson and Sam Bankfield all had two hits each in this game. Chet Brewer took the loss and Leroy Matlock picked up the win going the distance giving up five hits and two runs. Final score Hilldale 9 KC 2.
St.Louis Stars 8 at New York Lincoln Giants 6. St.Louis jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings only to see NY chip away and make it 5-3 after six innings. But the Stars score three in the top of the eight to pull away and then hang on for dear life as the Giants score three in the bottom of the ninth to make things close. But St.Louis hangs on for a big 8-6 win. For the Stars Oscar Charleston had a home run and two rbis as did Willie Wells and Candy Jim Taylor. Ted Trent the pitcher had a key two run single in the bottom of the eighth to help his cause. For the Lincoln Giants Chaney White score a run and had two rbis. Tubby Scales had a solo shot, Pop Lloyd went 4/6 with and rbi and Chino Smith went 2/5 with a run scoring single. Leon Day started for the Giants and Ted Trent picked up the win for the Stars.
Negro leagues. Homestead 9 at Chicago American Giants 8.. Chicago jumped all over Bill Byrd for 9 hits and 5 runs in teh second inning only to see HOmestead score 8 runs in teh final two innings in a huge come from behind 9-8 victory for Homestead. Josh Gibson’s 3 run shot in the top of the ninth was the big blow for Homestead. Sammy Hughes also had three rbis for the Grays. Quincy Trouppe , Turkey Stearnes and Bill Monroe all had three rbis for Chicago in the loss. Big Bill Foster was terrific for Chicago for 7+ innings. But things fell apart in the 8th and Tommy Williams and Willie Powell could not save the day.
Negro tournament. Homestead Grays 14 at St.Louis Stars 5 . Homestead jumps all over pitchers Roosevelt Davis and Bill Drake for a combined 14 runs on 16 hits. Josh Gibson led the way with two home runs and five rbis. Buck Leonard had two doubles , a triple and three rbis. For St.Louis Candy Jim Taylor hit a double, a triple and had three rbis. Sam Streeter went the distance for the win.
