Mike Smithson had a strong outing at Metrodome as the Minnesota Twins beat the
Toronto Blue Jays 3 to 1.

Minnesota tallied 2 runs in the 2nd inning when they came up with 3 base hits.
Darrell Brown opened up the inning nicely when he singled. Tom Brunansky
followed next and he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Gary Gaetti
then laced a one-base hit resulting in a run. One out later, Kirby Puckett
stepped up to the plate and he hit a single scoring the final run of the
inning. That early scoring was all that Smithson(2-0) needed. Minnesota had
a total of 10 hits for the game.

Dave Stieb(1-1) was charged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9
hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. ‘Our guys just weren’t seeing the
ball tonight.’ Bobby Cox said. ‘Smithson simply dominated us.’

Pascual Perez delivered 9 solid innings as the Atlanta Braves topped the
Houston Astros by a score of 3 to 0 at Fulton Co Stadium.

Houston was unable to recover after Atlanta went ahead in the bottom of the
4th inning scoring one runner. Both teams totaled 4 hits on the afternoon.
